Turn Around Truths For Your Business

Here is a list of business turn around tips that I have learned from the school of hard knocks:

1. Don’t think you know it all. You don’t.

2. You have more time to turn around your firm than you think.

4. You will have to fire at least 60% of everyone at your firm.

5. You will have to take a pay cut.

6. Don’t believe everything that your bankruptcy attorney tells you. He will want to put you into bankruptcy even if your firm only slightly distressed.

7. Don’t do anything unethical right now. Creditors, investors, lawyers and judges will discover any missteps.

8. You won’t be able to get financing. No one will lend to a firm that they think is in trouble. You must bootstrap.

9. You will have to fill any cash holes with sales of assets, cutbacks in costs and good old fashion vendor stretching.

10. Don’t go to your banker until you got a bulletproof restructuring plan.

11. If you sell your business right now, you will only get a fire sale price.

12. Fire anybody that is not on board with your restructuring plan.

13. Ask every person in the company including the janitor what is wrong. You won’t like what you hear, but it is the truth. Fix it.

14. Your turn around won’t go anywhere unless you have a well-thought out plan. Then deliver against the plan. Look at it everyday.

15. To be good at fixing businesses, you need to be part cheerleader and part dictator.

16. Always keep your own counsel. No one is going to be telling you the truth right now. And, anything you say in secret will always get out to the wrong person at the wrong time.

17. After your firm is out of danger, make sure to celebrate.
